Pool Loses More Water When the Pump Is Off: How to Read the Clue
The short answer
A pool that drops faster while circulation is off can point toward suction-side plumbing because running vacuum may draw air inward instead of pushing water out. Shell and fitting leaks can produce a similar pattern, so the clue must be verified.

What Changes When the Pump Stops
With the pump off, circulation pressure disappears and the pool seeks a static level. A compromised suction line below the waterline may leak outward while off, yet pull air inward under vacuum when running. That can make the measured water drop seem greater during shutdown.
Leaks in the shell, skimmer, drain, light niche, or other submerged fittings can also continue regardless of pump status. A small weather difference between test periods can exaggerate the apparent pattern, so treat it as a direction for testing rather than a diagnosis.

Document the Pattern Safely
Disable the auto-fill, mark the waterline, and compare equal on and off periods under similar conditions. Use a bucket test alongside the pool to control for evaporation. Record whether valves were moved and whether a raised spa changed level independently.
Do not allow water to fall below the skimmer and do not leave a pool without needed circulation longer than is safe for sanitation, weather, or equipment. A 24-hour period is often informative, but the right duration depends on the rate of loss.
Look for Suction-Side Symptoms
Air under the pump lid, bubbles returning to the pool, difficulty priming, or weak skimmer pull can support suspicion of a suction-side problem. Those signs can also come from an above-water lid gasket, valve stem, loose union, or low water level, which may admit air without leaking pool water underground.

Why Isolation Beats Plug-and-Watch Guessing
Professional pressure testing separates skimmer, main-drain, cleaner, and return circuits. Controlled plugs and gauges show whether a line holds. Underwater inspection then checks the shell and fittings so a static leak is not incorrectly blamed on buried suction plumbing.
If a line fails, electronic locating can narrow the break. If it holds, excavation is avoided and attention stays on the confirmed evidence.
Static Level Can Offer Another Clue
If the water repeatedly stops falling at the same elevation, note which fittings sit at that level. A skimmer throat or wall fitting becomes more suspicious when exposed, but a connected pipe may still drain to another elevation and more than one leak may exist.
Keep the pool at a safe operating level until testing unless instructed otherwise. Letting it drain for days can harm finishes, expose equipment to dry operation, and still fail to identify the source.
